HELLO OUT THERE IN HAYFEEDERS LAND!! I would like to take this time to welcome all of you to the “Hayfeeders” newsletter. I thought that this newsletter would help us all stay together, get reacquainted and get some good ole news at the same time!! I want all of you in it and we will welcome all the tid bits of news for anything!! I would also like to take this time and introduce you to myself and my family. We are not new to IPHA or to horses, but I understand that we are all new to you and the club. So here we go!!
I would like to
introduce me and my family to you, I am Sherri Davis, you new secretary for the
coming year. My family is: daughter Rendi, grandkids, Kayla (the tall redhead
that talks all the time), Justin, (the 6’3” 200 pd one!) my sister Jana, mom and
dad, June and Evan Leonard, brother Ken and my husband Gary. Oh! And our
“other” children, Ringo (the baby), D-O-G, Buster and Little Bit. Yes they are
the four legged children and believe me, they run the household. My husband
Gary, he is a truck driver
and
has been for oh about 27 years give or take! I guess you could say that he
loves his job---he is gone a lot and has some really screwed up hours, he is
home everyday, but then again I would be willing to differ with you on that
one!! HA Jana, well you all know her and that is another newsletter all by
itself! Ken and mom and dad, Ken used to show, but with his job now, it is hard
for him to do anything with the horses, so he tries and gets to what shows he
can and enjoys watching the kids show. My daughter Rendi, she has shown the
last couple of years with Jana and Kayla in western pleasure and showed a few
times in halter I think!
All of
that is hard to keep up with sometimes. Both my grandkids keep me busy too, one
shows longeline for Aunt Jana and the other rides and halters. Justin has also
worked some shows as ringmaster, so you might remember him. Me? Well, lets
see, I am just an ordinary housewife, I love working at home now, as for as many
years as I can recall, I have waitressed for over 30 years off and on, I managed
a few stores along the way, I ran our trucking business for some years and I was
a writer for one of our local papers. Now—I stay at home. I help with the
office at home, Leonard Farms and the Equine Massage account, office work from
clients that we have, and I run a couple of websites and I have a few auction
sites that I am getting back into. I love working at home, can you tell? I
love to cook, read mysteries, I like audio books, crocheting and watching
movies, new and old! So between all of that, keeping track of my family and
just keeping up at home, I keep myself busy!! And now I have the privilege to
keep up with you all too!!
‘Nuff’ about us ----- Let’s do some news!!

BANQUET
2007
The banquet was super nice this year! For those of you that were there we THANK YOU for all your support, and for those of you who weren’t there, we MISSED YOU and hope that you can be with us next year. It was a good time had by all, there were hugs, smiles, laughter and a lot of handshakes. Of course there were the norm, meetings, food and music too!! The youth did another great job on the silent auction this year. There were items from watch sets to blankets, buckets filled with goodies to a month’s worth of free training. We would like to extend a large THANK YOU to all of those who donated all the items, they were really great. The STALLION AUCTION went well also, we still have a few left that are up for sale yet, maybe we can get these gone by show season---ya think??! Let’s give it a go!! I will try and keep everyone updated as I get the news from Jessie. It was also a BIG night for our Youth. They have all worked so hard all year long, even with some tears along the way it was still a big night for them. They paraded up the aisle with smiles and grins as big as Texas and for the camera. I do believe they all deserved every moment. We are very proud of our youth, of what they all have become and what they ALL have accomplished throughout the show season. Even the ones that did not get any awards this year, you keep working, one day you will be up there too!! A job well done and CONGRATULATIONS to all of our winners this year!! You are all CHAMPIONS in our book!
*At the end of the newsletter there will be a copy of the all the winners from the banquet this year.*
HORSE

I want to remind all of you not to FORGET the HORSE FAIR coming in March. March 2-4 at the fairgrounds in Springfield, Il. The club could use your support there and there is so much to see and do. From the demonstrations with the horses to the clothing and booths galore! This would be a great little spring get-away weekend for the whole family to enjoy. So -- get your mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, aunts, uncles, cousins and anyone else you can think of and come on down!! OH! And don’t forget to stop by the IPHA booth and say “hi”, they will be glad to see you there!!

BEHAVIOR
PROBLEMS? ![]()
Have you ever wondered why your horse may be acting like they are under a lot of stress or just mad all the time? They just may be. A show horse especially, a pampered and treated well one, as well as we think that we are doing what is right by them, may be causing them to act “not right”. We -- believe it or not are are putting these animals under undo stress factors. From the way that they living in their stalls, to the way that they are treated, these all play into the part of their personality. These are a few of the factors: inhumane treatment, you losing your temper while training, isolation, no socialization, feeding programs, illicit drugs being shot into them, and much more of these factors all weigh in. A horse of any kind is a very social animal as well as a natural highly grazing creature. At least 85% of their time is in grazing. These non-natural environmental conditions that we think we are doing right by them can cause, cribbing, pawing, stall weaving, wood chewing, stall pacing and many more abnormalities.
Have you ever noticed when you walk by a stall that the horse inside will pin his ears back and take an aggressive posture? If you do see this, this should put a RED FLAG up in your minds eye. Be sure that your horses are well cared for, but on the other hand let them be who they are as well. Don’t break their spirit because they will not conform to whom you think they should be or act just a certain way because you want them to!! Just think if someone would treat you that way and take you away from what you know and know what you should be doing – to a small 10 x 10 box and only a certain amount of food? How would you react? “PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR HOOVES FOR AWHILE” Take this for thought –-- what would you think it if society came to the point of prosecuting people who mistreat a horse? Such as abuse, attempted murder, assault, and you can’t call it training – you can’t plead the fifth and you can’t use temporarily insane -- DON’T LAUGH OR SHAKE YOUR HEAD, it is closer than you think!! THINK ABOUT IT.
MUD
FEVER
This happens a lot this time of year and in the spring. With the wet and moist weather and all the mud. It is more commonly found in horses with white legs. BELIEVE IT OR NOT!! With the muddy and wet conditions the skin is in contact with more moisture than normal, this will cause it to become weak. The bacteria from the mud or a dirty stall can enter the skin causing “mud fever”. SYMPTOMS: Inflamed skin and matted hair followed by the appearance of crusty scabs. In some cases your horse may go lame from the infection. TREATMENT: Keep the infected area clean and dry. Wash it with warm water and antiseptic solution to soften and allow the scabs to come off on their own. DO NOT BRUSH OR RUB THE INFECTED AREA, as this will help spread the infection up the leg. The area must be dried thoroughly and then put on the antibiotic creams. Do this about 2-3 times a week. If you should have a bad case, then you should do this every day. If kept inside be sure the stall is clean and dry at all times. Keep the infected area wrapped gently or/and under exercise bandages. You should then keep your horse in a clean, dry environment for a least 7 days. If you have to turn them out, cover the area with Vaseline jelly, as this will keep out the moisture as well as the other bacteria. If you should turn them out to stay before it is healed good, then please wrap the area in bandages and cover them with the Vaseline jelly. This is to keep it as dry as possible. Be sure and have plenty of bandages of what ever you decide to use, to keep them changed and you can wash them as well. You can also use different creams that are on the market today also. You can use DESITIN and SUDA are 2 of them. They act like an antibiotic as well as a barrier against moisture. One more thing that you will need to remember: ONCE THEY GET “MUD FEVER” THEY WILL LIKELY GET IT AGAIN. If you should have any problems or questions with your horse, please contact your vet.
¨¨If you have had any problems that you came up with remedy’s on with your horses, please let us know and we will share it with our members.¨¨
JOKE
OF THE MONTH
“JUST WONDERING”
One day God was looking down at earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So he called one of his angles and sent the angel to earth for a time. When he returned, he told God, “Yes, it is bad on earth, 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.”
God thought for a moment and said,” Maybe I had better send down a second angel and get another opinion,” so God sent him to earth for a time too. When the angel returned, he went to God and said,”Yes, it is true. The earth is in decline: 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are being good.” God was not pleased, so he decided to email the 5% that were being good to encourage them and to give them a little something to help keep them going.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE EMAIL SAID?
NO??
Okay, just wondering -----------------I didn’t get one either!!!!!!!!
Thought this would give you a smile!
LOL = lots of laughs to you and yours
